Hindu families threatened by anonymous letters

Satkhira is enlisted as one of the ‘vulnerable’ areas of the country where specialised forces are running drives

Twenty Hindu families received anonymous letters yesterday, threatening them to leave their homes in Satkhira – an area considered to be a stronghold of Jamaat-e-Islami.

“You have been living here for a long time. Not anymore. Either you sell your domain or leave it; time has come to leave immediately,” the letters read.

The letters also read: “This time you have been told nicely. But the next time there will be no niceness.”

The 20 families residing near Judge Court in the Palashpole area have been tense since receiving the hand-written letters via post from Manobadhikar Sangha Satkhira, said representatives from a local human-rights association.

Satkhira is enlisted as one of the “vulnerable” areas of the country where specialised forces are running drives.

Satkhira sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque said no one had filed a written complaint in this regard. However, the police were looking into the matter.

Those who received the letters include five advocates Raghunath Mondal, Tapan Kundu, Tapan Das, Arpan Sarkar, and Kanti Lal Sarker. Other recipients include Rabin Sarker, Kamalesh Ghosh, Swapan Sana, Proshenjit Chakrabarty, Sanatan Shil, Bappa Dey, and Tapan Swarnakar.

Members of the Hindu community came under attack immediately after the national elections held on January 5, an incident condemned by national and international quarters.
