It was in November 1941 that Fr. Gasper A. Pinto, the founder of the Indian Missionary Society landed in Varanasi. When pressurised by the SVD Missionaries of Indore and the condition of the Church in North India during the Second World War, to found as Indian Missionary Society, he first thought of Varanasi to be its centre. It was his conviction that the sacred work of spreading the light of Christ in north India must begin with and from the religious capital of India, i.e. Varanasi, then known as Benares. The Lord fulfilled his dream by planting the Society in Varanasi itself. Despite the many storms of uncertainty that shook the foundations of the society, the Indian Missionary Society today is comfortably established here with its Generalate, and one of the provincialates and many centres in the vicinity of Varanasi city.
SHARING OF GOOD NEWS AND KHRIST BHAKTA MOVEMENT

Although efforts in the direction of sharing of Good News with the wider community had been made many times in the ashram from the very beginning of its existence it was in the early Nineties that serious steps were taken towards this, especially towards the sharing through the Word. It started with weekly Satsang organized on all Sundays. It was in the form of a two hour long prayer meeting and was attended by a few friends. From November 1993 to September 1994 the Ashram held night vigils on all second Saturdays. In September 1994 we started regular monthly day-long Satsang. Today more than 7000 people gather in the Ashram on all Second Saturdays for the day-long Satsang (Gospel discourse & Healing service). It is a joy to see people of all castes and creed from far and wide entering the ashram premises with deep faith and conviction that Jesus the Sadguru will give them a Darshan
