In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu near Thiruvalangadu, a few boys while playing by the Kosasthalaiyar river discovered an ancient and rare 12th-century Murugan statue in the river sand. It Weighs 150kg and stands 3.5 feet tall, it depicts Lord Murugan as Brahmasastha, with Japamala & Kamandala, and with accompanying artefacts nearby it appears to be from the later Chola period.
This discovery stirred up the excitement of local villagers, who helped to wash and clean the diety. Tahsildar Mathiazhagan, who oversaw the proceedings, has assured the locals that the Department of Archaeology will take charge of the statue for further examination and conservation efforts. Plans are underway to transfer the deity to the security of the Revenue Gallery, ensuring its safeguarding. The Indian Department of Archaeology will soon display the ancient deity for public viewing. According to Hindu traditions, this ancient form of Murugun is while taking over the creation duties of Brahma.
